Bob we met up with our son at O'Hare Terminal 3. Look for the area around USO. Ask your Sailor what time you should meet up. He  should have this info after he gets his orders. He will have his orders after PIR of course when he reports back. At the airport would be the time to hand off his mobile phone and any other accepted electronic devices he might need. I handed off my son's cel phone and packed a few civvies which he all stuffed in his huge duffel bag. My son too headed straight for PCola for A School early Sat the day after PIR...

PS. We spent like a good 3 plus hours with my son at the airport...There's a Starbucks there to keep you wide awake hehe...

I posted this in the "Boot Camp" group, but thought maybe it would be better to post it here.

Has anyone here ever met their Sailor at the airport after PIR, before they fly out to A school? I was wondering if we would be able to do that if my son flies out Friday night. We will only be in Chicago until early Saturday morning, so any time spent with him will be great!

Just as a Reminder...

Due to RTC's NEW 'number of guests' limitations regarding graduation (PIR), there is NAVY Livestream as a consolation for all those who cannot attend...

Per Recruit Training Command (RTC):

As of January 1st, 2013 Recruit Training Command will enforce the following policy:

ALL GUESTS, including Active Duty/Retired Military Personnel and those ages 3 and older must be on the access list. Children 2 and under do not need to be on the access list.

12 or less divisions within the training group: FOUR guest maximum per recruit.

13 or more divisions within the training group: THREE guest maximum per recruit.

Individuals not on the access list will NOT be able to enter the drill hall and we do NOT have a standby list. In addition please plan on arriving at least 1.5 hours before the ceremony, which begins promptly at 9:00 a.m.

Tickets/passes are not issued for the graduation. Recruits are permitted to list the names of their intended guests on the access list. Recruits cannot obtain additional ‘seats’ from other recruits.

GREAT LAKES, Ill. (NNS) -- The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), Adm. Jonathan Greenert visited Recruit Training Command (RTC) at Naval Station Great Lakes to attend a recruit graduation Aug. 9.

Greenert, was the guest of honor at the ceremony which was also attended by U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley, Illinois 5th Congressional District, who served as the reviewing officer.

"Recruit Training Command is the first stop for every civilian as they enter naval service," said Greenert. "This is where we teach our new Sailors trust, integrity, teamwork and mentorship."

RTC, the Navy's only boot camp, graduated 985 Sailors in 13 divisions and was attended by more than 3,000 family members and friends of the recruits.

"What impressed me most about the visit to RTC was the look of pride I saw on each Sailor," said Quigley. "That is the pride that will take the Navy's newest Sailors far in their naval careers."

Quigley and Greenert began the morning with a tour of the training facilities at RTC. Included in this tour was a stop at the Navy's largest trainer, USS Trayer (BST-21).

Trayer, a 210-foot-long Arleigh Burke-class destroyer replica, is where recruits undergo Battle Stations, their final evolution before graduating from boot camp.

During Battle Stations recruits must complete 17 different shipboard scenarios over a 12-hour period onboard Trayer. The state-of-the-art training facility uses theme park special effects technology to simulate a variety of shipboard emergencies, such as shipboard fires and compartment flooding.

RTC trains more than 37,000 volunteer civilian recruits annually, transforming them into Sailors.

Punch 3100 Ohio St into your GPS...Once you arrive at the gate you will be directed to the parking garage and the building right next to it for PIR... Just follow the line of cars that you will be in...very easy!

If you are driving to PIR, may I suggest driving over to the gate the day before. There are many different gates, but only one to enter for the PIR. It's the very last one and it's right before you hit the train tracks to the right. 

Better off making the drive beforehand so you know where you're going. 

I'd suggest parking at the train station and walking in. Don't worry about which building. They'll direct you. They don't exactly allow you to wander around a military base at your leisure.

The best thing I think is to google map the Recruit Training command 3505 Sailor Drive, Great Lakes, IL ‎ and get a satellite view.  The base is off of Buckley road and there are 2 main gates the one you want for PIR is off of Ohio St. you will see a white jet by the gate it is the last gate and if you look when you enter you can either drive to the right onto the base or park in the lot across the street and pay $3.00 and walk in.  The building where they do the PIR is the large building right across from the parking lot. There is another gate on Illinois St. which is were you will bring back your sailor and pick him/her up after PIR if they have leave over the weekend.  You will need your gate pass if you plan on driving onto the base.  I would highly recommend staying at the Navy Lodge it is only 1.3 miles from the base right off of Green bay road.

Can anyone give the name and whereabouts on base the building is where they do the PIR? What gate is best to go in? Scheduled to attend August 9th PIR. Starting to make tentative plans. Thank you in advance.
