If you are staying at a hotel that has a shuttle, you'd probably be better off using it as opposed to Sarge's cab. The drop off will be the same place either way (which is a very short walk into the building), and since there is only one Sarge, you won't be competing for a cab...and won't have to pay for the ride.

Although, if you have a car, you can park across the street at the train station for $2 and you'll be at the same place the shuttles and Sarge drops you off. If you are going to the train parking, the police will let you go around the long line to get onto the base.

Since our son was staying in GL, he had a bit of time to take us shopping at the NEX and to spend with him, before he had to go pack up to move across the street to his new base. Having the car gave us a bit extra time.

Paul, Brad, and Tom, thanks for the feedback. You have given me a couple of great suggestions for the pizza! I will indeed be taking Sarge's shuttle then because everything I have read on here is that it is a lot less hassle then getting a car into the facility. I am wondering if his is more advantageous than the Ramada's? I know the Ramada's is complimentary but if Sarge has a better drop off point or priority, etc. I will pay the minimal charge per head. Also, after PIR, I am assuming he has regular shuttles running back to the hotels? Just curious as my son will no doubt go with us so we can grab the car and go.

Charles...Sarge's Shuttle will pick you up at your hotel. You don't have to meet it anywhere...

The young lady at the Lodge wasn't totally incorrect. You have to make reservations in the name of your sailor to stay there. I believe the Ramada Inn  has a shuttle that will take you and pick you up from PIR, so that's one benefit to staying there.

Sarge does his meet n' greet at the Saloon, but his service can be anywhere in the area. If you go to the meet, get one of his cards. If your sailor will be stationed in GL, get one for him (or her) as well.

My son thought Giordano's was better than the Silo, but either is real Chicago style pizza. Downtown Chicago has the original Pizzeria Uno's and we love their pizza.

only the Great Lakes Navy Lodge is available without Military ID for reservations....at Pensacola your sailor will have to handle reservations and I believe check-in perhaps.....

I have a couple of questions for you PIR veterans. My son graduates 28 June. Does anyone have a favorite pizzeria in the area of Great Lakes for lunch? Also, does Sarge's cab service leave from the Navy Lodge only or the Sundance Saloon? We are staying at the Ramada Inn in Waukegan thanks to a young lady who didn't know what she was talking about at the Lodge. That was the first place I called (the Great Lakes facility not the toll free reservations line) and she very directly stated that you had to have a military ID.....which I subsequently found out to be erroneous information. I will call the toll free line when we visit him at A school in Pensacola.

Went to my son's PIR on 5-17-13.  It was awsome!  It was very emotional for us and our sailor when it was over and we got to go down to greet him.  A lot of happy tears shed by everyone.  The show they put on was outstanding.  Only wish the Navy could give family more information so they can plan the trip better.  Our sailor had to ship out at midnight so we only got a few hours to spend whith him and it went fast.
