To better accommodate traffic flow on the day after graduation when families and friends pick up Sailors for liberty, a new traffic plan will direct guests to the parking garage adjacent to the USS Yorktown visitors center, the same place you would park on graduation morning.
Gate 8 (same entrance used on graduation morning) will be open from 6 to 10 a.m. All guests will park in the garage to wait for their Sailors who will meet them there. When dropping off Sailors later in the day, guests will use Gate 6 at Illinois Street and Buckley Road and drop the Sailors off in the chapel parking lot.
Gate 8 will NOT be open to vehicular traffic when returning your Sailors from liberty. Sailors may also be dropped off at Gate 8 to access base on foot via the automated turnstile using their CAC (Common Access Card).
PLEASE NOTE: **ONLY GUESTS WITH GRADUATION TICKETS MAY ACCESS THE BASE WHEN PICKING UP AND DROPPING OFF SAILORS TO AND FROM LIBERTY! PLEASE RETAIN YOUR TICKETS FROM GRADUATION.** GUESTS INTENDING TO PICK UP A SAILOR FOR LIBERTY WITHOUT A TICKET WILL BE TURNED AND MAY HAVE TO PICK UP THEIR SAILOR AT GATE 8.
For those family and friends unable to attend RTC graduation, it will be streamed live over the internet at 0845 (CST) on the day of graduation. Please follow the link below and join us in honoring the service of these young men and women.

Our daughter Kaylei, is in Ship 11/ Div 134. Her PIR date is 27 April. We are traveling to the graduation with outr motorhome. We have reservations for the base campground til Sunday morning. Her "a" school in in GL. Is there anything we need to know about travel routes to the camground and then to the correct gate?? Also, about traffic around Chicago. I heard it was a bear at times. Was advised to hit the city at off peak times...Any help is welcome....We haven't got any phone calls yet, but there have been letters....
generally I've heard the Ramada as being "fair"....have seen posts where some folks noted that it looked rundown and somewhat unkempt.....
Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone has any feed back on the Ramada Inn. We just booked there for PIR on 05/11/12. Of course the pictures look good but was hoping to get first hand info. Thanks in advance.
Hi all... Just wanted to let you all know about a great program for Recruits. CallsforRecruits.org has FREE phone cards for recruits in bootcamp. If you or someone you know is leaving soon for bootcamp, go to the website and get some phone cards for them to use while they are at BC. They can use them at A school or anytime if they need them, although most people have cell phones these days LOL. Just thought I would pass along the info....
wow!!!!!! What a day.PIR was amazing. it was well organized for "gradzilla", getting in and out was easy. Left hotel about 6:30 and drove, were in our seats at 7:30. The energy of the crowd gave me goose bumps, the formality of evrything that was presented was great......but let me tell you.......when that door started to roll open (we sat directly across from it) OMG I was overcome with emotion, I was a mess.......the whole family was crying when we saw him march right in front of us. We were able to take him for liberty immediately after PIR and had a great afternoon catching up and letting him relax. Then, had him back at base by 7:00pm.......and another tough good bye, but we are going to meet him at the airport in the morning for final hugs............so proud of what he has accomplished. Congrats to all the sailors and their loved ones, it was a great day!
Family is psyched about leaving in the morning for GL......PIR is this Friday!!! We were able to have a long phone call with our son last Sunday and we were able to work out many details for the weekend. He said they are able to have their cell phones and laptops at the airport upon departure. He is glad for that so that he can skype with everyone....I'm not sure if he/we have to pay for internet service or not?? Idk......anyway it's going to be great weather (72 degrees) all weekend , can't wait to see how the 18yr old boy that left us has changed
Hi Becky...easiest way is 4 items up on the discussion forum titled A couple of helpful hints for PIR...on my screen its about 8 inches directly above this....you can also go to the very top of the page where it says Search navy dads...type in sarge and click on the magnifying glass symbol. I think Paul posted a neat video link to the flyer about a month ago, maybe he will do it again cause I can't find it. I depended on sarge for everything transportation in GL...didn't rent a car or use a city taxi....most times Sarge picked me up himself. once he sent one of his drivers...prices are cheap.service is FANTASTIC.
Let me know if you have trouble finding the links
