Tim,  My son's PIR was Feb 18 and he too has his A and C school there in Great Lakes.  Immediately after PIR they will call liberty.  We had to wait just a little while there at the base right after PIR and then he was free to go with us.  Unfortunately, you will have to return back to the base around 9:00 (21:00).  I think it is earlier on Sundays like 8:00 (20:00).  The good news is that you can be picked up early Saturday and Sunday and spend the days with your family.  You may want to check into the places to stay right around the base for your family. It may save some time and give you a few extra minutes to spend with them...and trust me.. eavery minute counts!!!

I ship for basic training on June 6, 2011 and my "A" school and "C" school will be taking place right there in GL. What I am wanting to know is once I graduate I will immediately cross the street to check in at the base, will I have the rest of the weekend with my family? And will I have to go back at night or am I free to spend the night with my wife and son?

 

On a side not I have been looking over this site and have loved the information that is on it. It has been very informative. Although when my wife looks at it she is going to be upset because it is based more for the parents and not the spouses.

LAST MINUTE TIPS:
Make sure everyone has ID's (birth certs for kids without ID's)
Bring at least 2 copies of the gate/parking pass - whether you plan on taking a shuttle to PIR or not, you'll need it to return your sailor back to base in the evening.
Binoculars - trust me on this!
Tide Stick Pen and a lint brush
Tissue - self explainatory!
Camera - and charger (or film)
Cell phone - and charger
Umbrella-just in case
GPS, reservation numbers, maps you may have printed
Husband, kids, etc (easy to forget those!)
An open mind to how your weekend will transpire - remember, they will be tired, they will be hungry and they just want hugs!
Bring your Sailors cell, laptop, ipod and all chargers to usein the room to catch up and if they are G&G you can give pass them on.
A comfy pair of clothes for your sailor to relax in while in your motel room
A sweater or jacket - it gets cold in the PIR hall
Whatever cool ribbon or name tag you may have made for your Meet & Greet
If you have room in your bag…a towel for your Sailor to sit on if you do go out and sightsee.

Best advice: Have fun and whatever you do, do NOT bring your sailor back to the base late. No one will forgive you for a long, long time! (If someone is late, they lose liberty the next day - and their whole division loses a couple of hours!!! NOT COOL)

WOW is all I can say. I was at my sons PIR on Feb 11,2011 with his mom and younger brother and sister. We had such a great time I was highly impressed and honored to have been in the presence of such fine young Seaman. It brought me to tears to see my son standing tall and proud with his division. He was ship 11 div 64. I'm truly amazed at his military Bearing the whole time we had him. YES we had him the whole FRAKKIN weekend WOOOT he checked in to his new orders at his A school across the street then we had him til 2045 on Sunday. We made every minute withh im count since we knew we probalby wouldnt see him again til school was out. to insure he knew we were there In the dead of silence I yellled his fave term "YIPPIEEE as loud as I could with choking up. He heard it :D :D :D and knew we made it in one piece from NJ to see him. we had driven straight through to insure we made it. I even gave myself an extra day to acct for any bad juu juu with the weather. But it seemed we had the angels on our side.

Jeff T, my son is halfway through MA training in San Antonio.  He graduates on March 18.

He took the opportunity, when I told him about the four inches of snow that fell last night in the Bronx, that it is 76 right now in San Antone.  Oohrah for him...

This is not a comment but rather a special occassion for all naval personnel and parents. Retired Rear Adm. William Wilson Pickavance, Jr. of the U.S. Navy became in 2008, supeerintendent of the Texas Maritime Academy, Texas A&M University at Galveston. 1967-68, was a cadet corps commande of the Texas Mariime Academy in Galveston. This was the home of the Texas Maritime Academy in the mid to late 60s. He was the commanding officer of the USS Kitty Hawk 1993-95. The Grand Lady of The Fleet. He is a graduate of Texas A&M in Galveston(Sea Aggies). This academy was formed by the help of Sen. "Babe" Schwartz of Galveston and the late U.S. Rep. Charlie Wilson of Texas. Rear Adm. Pickavance, Jr. was in the Merchant Marine and then entered naval flight training when his naval career began, with 32 years of service. Sea Aggies, Galveston, and the state of Texas salute this naval officer. GO NAVY

Ray, it was nice here. Of course we are from Florida so it is all relative for us. My wife and I still have the lump and tears as well. It truly was a life-changing experience. We have so much to be proud of and thankful for.
